5.0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased with the Stylus 400, September 27, 2003

I purchased this camera new from Ebay for $350 with a 64MB card. I have been very pleased with the camera. It is exceptionally compact and takes very good pictures. The camera is easy to operate for someone who isn't big on reading manuals. If you have Windows XP, the camera requires no software to transfer pictures to your PC. In fact, I have used the camera to act as a removable drive and used it to transport MS Word files between computers (I copied the files to the camera using Windows Explorer). So far I have printed out photo quality pictures up to 8.5 x 11 inches using the second highest 4megapixel setting (about 1 mb per pic). One criticism I have is regarding the included memory card. 16MB is really too small to do much with. The highest resolution consumes about 2 megabytes per shot and the second highest takes 1 mb per shot. You really need at least a 64MB card and preferably a 128 or 256MB card or you will be forced to use the lower resolution. Overall, I have... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Primary virtue is it's weather resistance, July 13, 2003
This review is from: Olympus Stylus 400 4MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
Good Point's:
1.)Weather resistance (note- it is not waterproof, but does have a nice rubber seal under the access port for it's I/O and card slot).
2.)Small Size - easily fits in front pants pocket
3.)Metal,relatively tough outer body - also more scratch "resistant" owing to anodized or matt texture to the metal surface making scratches less apparrent.
4.)integral, tough lens cap - you'll never loose it.
5.)XD memory cards - expensive but very fast, hence compensating somewhat for the minimal integral frame buffer to improve shooting speed.
6.)Rechargable Lithium battery - bucks up front (get a spare), saves big in the long term.
Bad Point's:
1.)Cost - cheaper cameras for the price - though none that are weather resistant.
2.)XD memory cards - Costly and "yet another USB dongle" to buy for your PC if you transfer your px by removing the card and plugging it into a card reader. At least Windows XP will recognize the camera (when connected... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Camera!!!, June 24, 2003
By
Brian Dq (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Olympus Stylus 400 4MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
This Camera is great!!! I bought this camera right before a trip to Las Vegas and have no regrets. In fact I can't imagine my trip without it. I took over 120 pictures on High Quality resolution and still had 140 shots left with my 256 card. The Camera is so small that I went clubbing with it in my pocket and was still able to bust moves on the dance floor. The display screen is a good size and the buttons are easy to access. The features are easy to access and take about 5 minutes to learn. The different shooting modes come in handy depending on your shooting conditions. Panaramic mode is awesome! I took a great shot of the Las Vegas Strip using the panoramic mode and stitched it using the software included. You have to have an OLYMPUS BRAND MEMORY CARD to use panorama mode. Some people complain about the new Xd card, but there are so many good things about it. It is so small; about the size of a stamp. The size helps consume less battery life. I never had a problem with my battery... Read more

I am very impressed with this camera, and I highly recommend it. My only complant is its battery life which is good, but just not as good as the rest of the camera. It takes super great pictures, and has many useful features and shooting modes. Like panorama, Magic, and beauty. I love having the 7X optical zoom, along with the 5X digital. You can use the digital zoom even while shooting video. It has this cool feature that I really like called Sequential shooting, which can take many many picture very fast. Of course it reduces the quality of the photo, but not to an unbearable level, and if you don't zoom in unnoticeable.

Pros-

*Picture quality
*Ease of use
*Features
*Zoom
*Speed

Cons-
*Perfect camera, just not enough battery life

I love this camera and encourage you to buy it. The battery wont trouble you unless you are going on a trip like I was and you take over 400 pictures a day.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Point and Shoot, September 12, 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Olympus Stylus 7030 14 MP Digital Camera with 7x Wide Angle Dual Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7-Inch LCD (Titanium) (Camera)
I bought my Olympus a few days before a big trip to France. I hoped it wasn't a dud, but I had looked around at local stores and online reviews and it kept standing out to me. I was concerned at first about having no physical "how to" manual, but it hasn't been a problem. I played with all the features on my trip, and I have to say my photos have been stunning - clear, amazing colors, great range of view. The panorama feature especially has been a treat - easy to use and it creates such unique perspectives. The macro feature also gave my close-up shots crisp definition with great depth. I can't count the number of times I've said "I love this camera!" The only piece I'm not crazy about is that it's a rechargeable battery, so I have to think ahead and make sure it's charged before taking it somewhere; not great for spontaneous needs, but I'll deal with it. The best part of all of this is, I would have paid so more for it - the price can't be beat. I highly recommend this to... Read more

This is the 2nd Olympus Stylus camera I have bought. I wanted a more compact camera for travel. I love this one, very easy to use. Loads of different features. The photo's very clear and sharp. Great zoom. I just wish the battery had a longer life. I bought an extra battery so always have a spare fully charged battery backup.
I reccomend it and would buy again.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great go anywhere camera and worthy upgrade., March 6, 2009

This review is from: Olympus Stylus Tough-6000 10 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 3.6x Wide Angle Optical Dual Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7-Inch LCD (Blue) (Electronics)
The Stylus Tough 6000 is the second Olympus waterproof camera I've got. I got the original 720SW, it survived quite a few adventures and continues its faithful service with a friend. I was ready for an upgrade.

There were two main reasons I upgraded from the 720sw. One was the wide angle lens 28mm vs 35-38mm on it. The other was hopefully longer battery life. I found the 720sw's battery life to be anemic at best.

I considered the 1030sw but decided to try out the new generation of sensor, CCD image stabilization and tap control. The Stylus Tough 8000 was also a contender but I didn't need the extra hardened casing or expense. This has the same rating as the 720SW which survived everything I threw at it and now comes in three attractive colors. I got the blue one.

Overview

Pulling the camera out of the box and playing with it there were several notable improvements over the previous generation. It's not quite as heavy and uses more plastics... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Expensive, okay snaps and not waterproof, April 15, 2009
This review is from: Olympus Stylus Tough-6000 10 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 3.6x Wide Angle Optical Dual Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7-Inch LCD (Blue) (Electronics)
The Olympus Tough 6000 is a neat little camera which offers a host of very useful features, chief amongst them being a wide angle lens (28mm equivalent) and its robust 'go anywhere' feel. It's fairly easy to operate, though one foible I am not keen on is the on/off button which needs to be depressed a bit too long for it to do it's job - hey, mark that as a minor foible. That's the good news.

Picture quality is so-so. If you take snaps, do a bit of basic cropping (just a little, mind) and limit your expecations of those of family viewing then the image quality is fine. The reticience on my part on the matter of image quality is that the Olympus Tough 6000 is no better than many cameras that cost half its price. The flash works but seems to do so with a single setting - it readily creates blown out highlights on too many photographs, the sensor produces noticeable noise, and the lag between pushing the shutter to taking the shot can be interminable. I admit that I... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars More like Olympus unTough, June 14, 2009
My wife and I bought this camera for underwater photography at the beach. Within one month of purchase we used it on two separate outings, in both cases it was submerged less than 3-feet under water. During the second outing, the camera locked up and failed.

During the first outing, I realized a stupid design mistake on the camera: there is an automatic retracting lens cover (a sliver of stainless steel) on the outside of the lens. While this does protect the lens, it also traps any moisture accumulated on the lens, requiring frequent cleaning with shirts or whatever might be available (I don't usually go out on the beach with a lenspen or microfiber). The worrisome part of this design, is that if there is enough room for a sliver of metal to move back and forth, then there is enough room for water and moisture to get inside.

During our second outing, after five minutes we noticed big white spots had occurred on the LCD screen which I can only assume means... Read more
