Amazon.com Product Description

Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, the almost identical D-450 model, the Olympus D-460L is a user-friendly and budget-friendly digital zoom camera. It offers a maximum resolution of 1,280 x 960 pixels and picks up images with a 0.37-inch, 1.31-megapixel CCD. You can bring objects up to six times closer with the combined 3x optical and 2x digital zoom lens. With programmed exposure control, white balance control, and an automatic through-the-lens contrast-detection system, the Olympus D-460L does all the thinking for just the right exposure and focus. It also features a built-in six-mode flash with red-eye reduction to illuminate a variety of low-light situations.

The Olympus D-460L includes special features such as a 12-second self-timer, date imprinting, and a continuous-shooting mode. While the Olympus D-460L's automatic functions make it easy to take digital images, it also has an assortment of manual options to expand your creative potential. You can manually tweak the white balance, select a film-speed equivalent, or use special settings, such as macro, to achieve precisely the shot you want.

Using SmartMedia memory, the Olympus D-460L comes with an 8 MB card, which is enough memory for 122 normal-quality, 36 high-quality, or 18 superhigh-quality shots. This camera also comes with a software package for photo filing and editing as well as the necessary connectors to hook the camera up to your PC or Macintosh for uploading.

Olympus backs the D-460L with a one-year warranty.

  • 1.2 megapixel sensor captures enough detail for photo-quality 5 x 7 prints
  • 3x optical plus 2x digital zoom lens with autofocus
  • Included 8 MB SmartMedia memory holds 36 images at default resolution
  • Connects with Macs and PCs via serial port
  • Uses 4 AA or 2 proprietary lithium batteries (2 lithium batteries included)

5.0 out of 5 stars High quality and easy to use, April 18, 2000

This review is from: Olympus D-460 1.3MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
I did a lot of research on digital cameras before I purchased the Olympus 460 ZOOM and I am extremely happy with this camera. My criteria were picture quality, advanced features and a price under $500. After a week of taking over a hundred pictures, I'm very impressed with both the crisp quality and true to life colors of each picture. It automatically adjusts to florescent, incandescent, and outdoor light. The selectable ISO settings makes for very impressive low light pictures. The panorama stitching was easy to use and very accurate. This will be great for taking seascapes while on vacation. I'm still on my first set of batteries so battery life is great. I read a lot of reviews on the D450 ZOOM before I purchased the D460 and all the small things that owners complained about were fixed. Olympus really must listen to customer feedback. The menus are easy to use, it remembers settings when turned off, they even ship three manuals in each language instead of one in three... Read more

This review is from: Olympus D-460 1.3MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
I have been using this camera for about a month now. I did extensive research on the internet for digital cameras $500 and under. The runners where Olympus 360L, Kodak 210, and Olympus D460Z. And it is a very impressive camera overall. The camera itself offers wide angle or zoom 3x shots. It also offers a 3x cropping to bring it to 6x. It's menu is very easy to use out of the box. Has 2 menu modes, one with camera active, one when it's not active (setup mode.) It's auto focus is by holding the button halfway down for a sec, then clicking. It's wide/zoom is a small lever next to shutter button for easy access. You can use it's LCD or to save on batteries it's normal view frame for taking shots. The smartmedia card and batteries easily installs/uninstalls. If offers what they call a Paranormal mode which takes multiple pictures on one frame. It offers a sequence mode that lets you take 10 pictures back to back with for a series shot. You will need to format your SmartMedia... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars The digital camera that made me take the plunge - finally, August 6, 2000

This review is from: Olympus D-460 1.3MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
I'm primarily a 35mm and subminiature photographer and was waiting until digital resolution and price met at a nice point. The D-460 did it for me.

First, a couple of warnings: 1) Batteries - Although Amazon lists 4 AA alkalines as the power source, don't count on it. The two included Olympus lithium batteries (which are each the same size as a pair of AAs) are a special high output chemistry. You will be VERY unhappy if you take the camera to an event and only have one set of alkalines. Digital cameras use a lot of juice, especially when you download and when you use the LCD screen. The consumer problem is that the Olympus batteries (CR-V3, or p/n LB-01E) are VERY hard to find. I've not seen any in camera or electronics stores, although you can purchase them for $14 ea directly from Olympus -- and Olympus says you should be able to buy them from several internet vendors, but the only one on their list that even showed the batteries was B&H, and they didn't... I bought this for an upcoming trip to take snorkeling, but first wanted to test it out. So I went to a pool party for a 4 year old, and gave the camera to my 6 year old neice and told her to do whatever she wanted with it. I posted 2 pics above for you to see. I figured it a good score just for still working after a 6 year old dropped it into the pool twice, and once even got a nice big scratch on the side, but still works great. The pics aren't perfect, a little washed out, but the only reason I bought this camera was to take it underwater, and the price. I'm sure if you spent more money for the canon it might take better pics, but these will do just fine for me. So if you are looking for a basic underwater camera that takes decent pics, more for photo albums than publishing, this camera is probably for you. The kids LOVED it, and if my 6 year old neice can work it underwater, everyone else should have no trouble.
The only Con I have is that the battery was almost... Read more

This being the first digital camera I have owned, though I have used several extensively, the reader should bear in mind my limited frame of reference to other digital cameras. I am and have been for 35 years an avid film photographer. As digital photography has finally advanced to the level where a comparable finished photo can be taken with a camera affordable to non pros (or at least non-photogeeks!), I took the plunge.

The waterproof function was an afterthought in my case, though a welcome one. It has performed well in this regard. I mainly wanted not to worry or think about water and I haven't had to. The 550WP is not at all bothered by steady rain, splashes, and a dunk or two in streams, lakes, tubs, etc. Score one!

I am generally frustrated and critical of digital cameras (save DLSRs) for their automaticity. I have yet to see a model that allows manual and independent adjustment of shutter and aperture, so lets forget that here. The manual features... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Tested at the store... Disappointed., March 24, 2009
whoareyou (SoCal) - See all my reviews
I very recently bought the new Fuji Z33 WP camera, but since I am unhappy with the high levels of image noise, I will be returning it and looking for a replacement. The other top camera on my list was the Olympus 550WP. I went to a major electronics store yesterday and had the opportunity to play with the 550WP. The salesman even let me put my microSD card into the camera to save some test shots to view on my computer at home.

The image quality does not make me excited to buy this camera. The pictures show a significant amount of noise, even when I forced the ISO down to 100. Every shot without a flash looks pale and slightly hazy. With a flash, the image quality improved, but there is still an unreasonable amount of image noise. The best shots were taken of objects about 10 feet away. This was a good distance to prevent the flash from washing out the subject, but still providing an adequate amount of light to get a decent picture. Even those shots seemed to lack... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great camera for value, October 13, 2010
This review is from: Olympus Stylus 5010 14 MP Digital Camera with 5x Wide Angle Dual Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7-Inch LCD (Titanium) (Camera)
I own 2 other cameras a Nikon Coolpix point and shoot 12MP and a 15.1 Rebel T2i DSLR.

For a 200 dollar camera, it really isn't all too bad. 14MP and 5x optical zoom. Lens[ 4.7-23.5mm 1:2.8-6.5 ]

OVERALL feeling: (4.8 of 5)
It has pretty clear picture taking capabilites and is very USER FRIENDLY. Panaramic function works amazingly well. The camera itself is a great size and looks pretty slick, it doesn't look like a cheap camera. I think anyone would be happy with this purchase. It has a HDMI port and can take SDHC memory cards. You charge the camera battery with the battery in the camera, and the power cord is plugged into the camera itself, that is a nice feature, to not have to pull the battery out all the time to charge(like the coolpix i have). The buttons light up when touched momentarily and the camera has a nice power save option; all nice features.

HD VIDEO: (4.8 of 5) Not too shabby, volume is a little low, but im pretty sure there... Read more

This review is from: Olympus Stylus 5010 14 MP Digital Camera with 5x Wide Angle Dual Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7-Inch LCD (Titanium) (Camera)
I have used cameras of one type or another for close to 50 years. Had my own darkroom back in the days of film. Have had digital models since 1M was as big as they got. Wanted a small one to carry around. Cell phone cam is just too much trouble and too limited.

Read all the reviews for all the small Olympus, Cannon, Panasonic, et al. Used my girlfriend's Cannon. Decided that since an old Olympus E100RS Sports Photographers model was the best I have EVER used I would stay with the brand.

I love this little thing! It is hard to hold still on long tele shots and I doubt I will ever get used to not having a viewfinder but I still love it. Have used it in Program mode mostly and played with some programed Scene shooting. Love the Super Macro best of all. Have some great close ups of my honeybees.

Does everything it is supposed to and does it well. People who have had problems using it just didn't Read The F****** Manual. I downloaded the manual... Read more

This camera takes mainly good photos straight out of the box. There's no real need to play with the settings which I like. My main use for this camera is photographing people, and I preferred using the standard Auto setting as opposed to the portrait scene setting - in portrait, the pictures were mostly a little too pink. The standard auto setting reproduces skin tones nicely. It does seem to be a little soft on detail indoors though - you can't really tell it's 14mp unless you're outdoors on a sunny day.

One gripe is the processing speed - even with a quick card, after you take a photo it takes a good 8 seconds before the camera is ready to take another one. That's annoying if you just missed 'the' shot, and then the next opportunity happens while you're waiting for the camera to sort itself out.

The video quality could also be better - especially on the sound front, and it suffers badly from over exposure in sunny outdoor settings. So don't buy this camera if... Read more
